Pain is at the center of Jaamil Olawale Kosoko's performance #negrophobia. As part performance lecture and séance, the work is a personal story of loss and escape. In response to the violent death of his brother, Kosoko questions the identity of African-American men. As an artist and poet with an overwhelming physical presence, Kosoko navigates between personal and social concerns. Together with performance artist IMMA, and composer Jeremy Toussaint-Baptiste, Kosoko shifts the performance space with powerfully staged bodies to reflect how the spectators are involved in the construction of racism.
